On Sunday night we gathered to witness the deconsecration of MCC San Francisco at 150 Eureka. This building was witness to the lives & deaths of many queer people in the Castro.
Amos and I had our relationship blessed there April 21, 2000. This blessing was preformed by Rev Jim Mitulski on the fifth anniversary of our first e-mail. The sanctuary was shrouded in black. I felt that this was strangely appropriate because of our tentative position in this country due to Amos’ immigration status. We exchanged the rings that we’d picked out
almost 2 years before.
The evening was an emotional one for me. My mind floated between the reality and the symbolism of everything that transpired. Gathered were the many items of significance and they
were removed form the building with words of remembrance and prayers. This was followed by a silent walk to Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, like Moses exodus from Egypt. And like Moses, Rev. Dr. G Penny Nixon would not see the new church. At MHR Catholic Church, she gave her final sermon to the congregation of MCC SF. The emotions of the service were
compounded by the setting of a classic Catholic Church, which reminded me of the Church of my youth in Butte MT.
